Becase of their tax advantages, there is a limit to how much you can invest in an ISA each year. In the 2014/15 tax year the maximum you can invest in an ISA is $15,000
What you can invest in
A Stocks and Shares ISA is designed to help individual savers participate in the performance of stockmarkets. This means that your ISA savings can be in a wide range of investments, including:
- Managed funds – professionally managed funds that invest in the shares of many companies
- Investment trusts – similar in aim to investment funds but structured as private limited companies
- Corporate and government bonds – useful for providing an income from your investments
- Individual company shares – alternatively, you can invest some of your ISA allowance in the shares of individual companies listed on the main UK stockmarket
